Above is a picture of two bears. I have been watching a bearcam while I try and write about matchmaking rating MMR in Dota 2 [ official site ]. I associate it with miserable gaming experiences and being used to undermine people in discussions. Essentially matches are supposed to be balanced and fun. One of the main factors it takes into account for all this is the MMR. In order to change that number you need to win matches in solo ranked mode.
There are various strategies people suggest for improving your MMR: Play something independent so you can do well if your team is shit. Play something team-focused so you can save their sorry asses when they screw up. And so it continues with some options making more sense than others… Thing is, the strategies are different but the mentality informing them is often pretty similar.
By that I mean they tend to assume that you are a being placed below your REAL skill level and b that your teammates are liabilities. In my personal experience ranked matches are far more hostile than unranked. But in my time with the mode the players seem more prone to blaming others and less inclined to help one another. You want your hit of nice green 25s — you deserve them — and every mistake a teammate makes gets in the way.
Although you won’t get the number MMR anymore, smurfing still works and this method is still applicable for the new matchmaking system, which is the medal system – Many players are struggling to get the high MMR Matchmaking Rating that they have wanted. Earlier today, Valve finally addresses its stance on the highly requested and anticipated ranked matchmaking system and a legitimate matchmaking rating feature or MMR. In their blog post, Valve reveals that the ranked matchmaking feature will be added on the Dota 2 client in the next major update. Valve also gives a sneak peek on the upcoming features. This mode is aimed at experienced players who want to play in a more competitive environment and know their matchmaking rating MMR. Today I want to talk about one of those social issues that keeps popping up: Some people cannot enjoy the solo queue game, and Valve is obligated to offer them a form of casual matchmaking so they can play with their friends. The matchmaker does what it can to make decently competitive games while not allowing queue times to skyrocket, but the results are not pretty. The picture here is a little clouded. We can only see who these players have played with in the past month, inactive players are not filtered out, and Dotabuff cannot show us players who have decided the remain anonymous.
Solo queue players who are constantly matched into games that we know are not statistically competitive but that are created for expediency. What this does is create a burnout point, where the primary way these players interact with the game is so frustrating that they lose interest in the game as a whole. Some of these players will quietly quit, or at least scale back their playtime, and we will then just throw the next tier of players into the grinder so that the cycle can continue.
Some say that these players should be grateful that they have the opportunity to play against the pros and learn from the experience, but I find this argument rather unconvincing. If you were to create a game with 8 talented amateurs and a profession player on either team, that could easily be an educational experience for everyone involved. Some of those players are going to give up internally before the creeps even spawn, and being essentially down 4v5 against a far more coordinated team is not an environment well-suited for learning anything.
A alternative solo queue would address this issue, but the danger is that the solo queue could become so popular that finding a casual team match would become difficult or impossible. As I mentioned earlier, casual team matching is a necessary feature of the system and is as important as addressing this burnout point.
